Nasal & Sinus Surgery
Surgery for nasal or sinus surgery
Most nasal and sinus conditions can be managed with nonsurgical treatments, but in some cases, surgery may be necessary, especially when other treatments have failed. Surgery might be recommended for issues such as chronic sinusitis, nasal blockages, deviated septum, nasal trauma, frequent nosebleeds, polyps, enlarged turbinates, or chronic breathing problems. The decision to proceed with surgery depends on the patient’s symptoms, overall health, and specific needs.
What types of nasal and sinus surgeries are commonly performed?
Depending on the condition, lifestyle, and insurance coverage, an ENT may recommend one or more of the following procedures:
- Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS): Uses a tiny endoscope to remove inflamed tissue and improve sinus drainage.
- Image-Guided Surgery: A highly precise version of endoscopic surgery using 3D mapping from CT scans for complex sinus issues.
- Balloon Sinuplasty: Involves inflating a small balloon inside the sinuses to widen nasal passages without tissue removal.
- Caldwell Luc Operation: Improves maxillary sinus drainage by creating a new pathway from the sinus to the nose via the upper jaw.
- Septoplasty/Septorhinoplasty: Reshapes or repositions the septum to improve airflow, treat a deviated septum, or repair nasal trauma.
- Turbinate Surgery: Reduces airway obstruction caused by swollen turbinates using various techniques such as tissue removal, repositioning, or radiofrequency reduction.
How are these nasal and sinus surgeries performed and where?
Many procedures are performed in-house or at an outpatient surgical center. Most are minimally invasive, meaning less downtime and faster recovery. Endoscopic tools and cameras are used in many surgeries to allow for precision without external incisions. Recovery time and instructions vary by procedure, but most patients can return to normal activities within a short period.
