Immunotherapy for Allergies

What is immunotherapy for allergies?

Immunotherapy is a long-term allergy treatment that helps your body build tolerance to specific allergens. It involves introducing small amounts of the allergen and gradually increasing the dose over time to reduce sensitivity.

There are two main types:

  • Subcutaneous Immunotherapy (SCIT) – commonly known as allergy shots
  • Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT) – known as allergy drops

Who is a good candidate for immunotherapy, and how is it administered?

Immunotherapy is ideal for individuals whose allergy symptoms don’t respond well to medications.

How is Immunotherapy administered for allergies?

After identifying the allergen trigger, a custom extract is prepared.

  • With allergy shots, small injections are given in the upper arm weekly, then tapered to monthly over time.
  • With allergy drops, the extract is placed under the tongue daily and then swallowed.

Both methods typically take 3–5 years to produce lasting results.

Comparison between allergy shots and drops

Both treatments aim to desensitize the immune system, but they differ in delivery:

Allergy shots are FDA-approved, administered in a clinic, and may cause minor injection site reactions.

Allergy drops (not FDA-approved in the U.S.) can be taken at home, offer a lower risk of side effects, and are more convenient for some patients.

While both are effective, the choice depends on patient preference, allergy severity, and clinical recommendation.

Is immunotherapy safe, and what allergies does it treat?

Immunotherapy is generally safe and effective for treating pollen, dust mites, mold, animal dander, and insect venom allergies. It is not effective for food or drug allergies. Side effects are rare but may include mild redness or swelling at the injection site. Keeping a regular treatment schedule minimizes the risk of serious reactions.
