Cochlear Implant

The cochlear implant is an electronic device that is surgically implanted under the skin with electrodes positioned in the cochlea (organ of hearing) to stimulate the auditory nerve (hearing nerve). The cochlear implant has both internal and external parts and should give the patient sound perception by stimulation of the auditory nerve via the implanted electrode array. A cochlear implant is indicated for patients with severe to profound bilateral (two ear) hearing loss that cannot benefit from conventional hearing aid technology.

Bone Anchored Hearing Device

The Bone Anchored Hearing Device is a percutaneous device primarily used for patients with conductive hearing losses or with single-sided deafness. A small titanium fixture is surgically placed behind the patient’s ear. An external sound processor can be attached, at will, to this fixture via a percutaneous abutment. The device works by sending sound through bone conduction transmission directly to the inner ear.
