Rhinitis (Nonallergic)
What is nonallergic rhinitis, and how is it different from allergic rhinitis (hay fever)?
Nonallergic rhinitis causes symptoms similar to hay fever such as a runny or stuffy nose and sneezing, but it is not caused by allergens or an immune system reaction. Instead, it involves the dilation of blood vessels in the nose, often triggered by environmental factors or physical conditions.
What causes nonallergic rhinitis?
Common causes include dust, smoke, chemical fumes, changes in humidity, spicy foods, alcohol, stress, infections, hormonal changes, and even pregnancy.
Symptoms of nonallergic rhinitis
The main symptoms are nasal congestion, sneezing, and a runny nose, which often mimic those of allergies.
How is nonallergic rhinitis diagnosed and treated?
Since the symptoms resemble those of allergic rhinitis, doctors typically perform allergy skin or blood tests to rule out allergies. Once diagnosed, treatment may include nasal sprays, oral decongestants, nasal irrigation, and avoiding known triggers such as scented products or household chemicals. A humidifier may also help reduce irritation.
Can nonallergic rhinitis be prevented?
Because nonallergic rhinitis often results from a genetic predisposition to blood vessel dilation, complete prevention can be difficult. However, you can manage it by avoiding known triggers, staying well hydrated, and limiting the use of nasal decongestants, which can worsen symptoms with overuse.
