Sublingual Immunotherapy
What is sublingual immunotherapy, and who might benefit from it?
Sublingual immunotherapy is a long-term allergy treatment that involves placing allergy drops under the tongue instead of receiving injections. It's ideal for individuals who haven’t found relief from medications or lifestyle changes and are looking for a convenient, at-home alternative to allergy shots.
How does sublingual immunotherapy work?
After your doctor identifies the allergen causing your symptoms, a customized extract is prepared. You take daily drops under the tongue, gradually increasing the dose until you reach a maintenance phase. Over time—usually 3 to 5 years—your body builds tolerance to the allergen, reducing or eliminating allergy symptoms.
What are the benefits of sublingual immunotherapy?
Sublingual immunotherapy offers several advantages:
- No needles – drops are taken orally
- Convenience – can be administered at home
- Fewer side effects – generally well-tolerated
While not yet FDA-approved in the U.S., it is considered safe and effective, and is endorsed by the World Health Organization as a valid alternative to allergy shots.
Is sublingual immunotherapy right for me?
If medications and other allergy treatments haven’t worked, and you want a long-term solution, sublingual immunotherapy may be worth considering. Talk to your doctor about whether this option is appropriate for your specific allergies.
